Set Up

This is the set up page for the Brockaerth play by email game. This is the campaign map. Hopefully the terrain types are pretty clear. The medium blue is sea and only navigable by fleets. The only inland hexes accessible by fleets are the black lines which represent major rivers. The dark blue is marsh/swamp. The light green is plains and the dark green forest. The brown is mountains and the very pale blue ice/tundra.

To set up a faction for the game, mail me ideas for the following. I will try to fit them all in, but there's a chance they might contradict other factions'. This is a pretty standard fantasy feeling game, but I'm happy to accommodate weird and wonderful faction types.

The type and name of your faction and the name of your area and ruler. A symbol (for mapping). A specific hex for your capital. The broader area you wish to settle in. Your favoured terrain type for settlement and food but also in regard to fighting. Your main troop type, and your powered-up hardcore best troops. Any other ideas you have for backstory, or troop types, and beliefs.

As an example, I will be Spoony the king of the Marsh Elves. We use a tree symbol. We live in the Gloomy Marshes, and our capital is the Skullswamp at hex Z99. We favour marsh/swamp, where we we trap bog octopuses and fry them. Our main troops are elf legion infantry, who are famously hard to spot in the marshes, and our crack unit is the King's Guard who wear tortoise shell armour. Our only mounted troops are bog octopus riders who are notoriously slow but tough fighters. We also have a decent fleet, as we're at home in the wet.

For clarity, the coordinates for each hex go horizontally and vertically as demonstrated below. This is the example for referencing hex P7.

You get Build Points/Brockaerth Pennies(BPs) to start off your faction. And can buy from the following list. You can keep some points in reserve for buying stuff later, if you wish. You also use BPs as a currency for trading between each other and NPCs, etc. I will add to this list as we go, probably.

People: 3 BP
General, every separate army must have a general
Scout, exploring, talking to NPCs
Assassin, can kill enemy people (not rulers), NPCs
Magic Users

Buildings:
Capital (counts as castle/stronghold): Free
Castle/Stronghold: 5 BP (counts as 2 units of Trained Infantry+Missiles)

Forces: 1/2/4 BP
Cavalry
Infantry
Missiles
Light Horse
Boats

Any military unit that costs 1 BP is bog-standard. A 2 BP unit counts as Trained, or 4 counts as Elite.

You can get more points every turn, based on victories/territories/discoveries, etc.

Scouts are useful for exploring. There will be stuff on the map that you can't see but scouts will be able to see them if they come across them. Troop types with Stealth won't be mapped unless they get close to another faction.

So, for example, the Marsh Elves starting force might look like this:

3 general (so I can split my forces into three) 9 BP
1 unit Kings Guard: 4 BP
6 units Infantry: 12 BP
6 units Missiles: 12 BP
2 units Light Horse, Bog Octopus Riders 4 BP

I decide that all my Infantry & Missiles have the special ability of Stealth when in a swamp, and I ask the GM for that, and he generously lets me have it for free. (Coz that's kinda my factions special ability.)

I decide to split my forces in the following way: I make a royal army which is the King's Guard, 3 units of Infantry and 3 of Missiles, the field army, which is 3 units of Infantry and 3 of Missiles, and then an Expeditionary Force which is the 2 units of Light Horse.

I decide to make the Stronghold of Quagmire at the other end of my territory, to complement my capital of Skullswamp: 5 BP.

Finally I decide to have 2 scouts, to send them off and explore and see what there is out there, for 6 BP.

This makes a total of 52 BP, which is too many, so I decide to forget about Quagmire, spending 47 BP, keeping 3 BP in reserve, and hoping to build Quagmire later.

There's an efficient postal service/crystal ball system throughout the land so that all faction rules will be able to talk to each other instantly via email. I have to be included on all emails, however! How I will find out if you send private emails without including me, is hard to know.

If you want other power-ups, ask me and we can discuss them and I will make up a cost for them.
